Coachella Valley in southern California is an arid basin bordered by the San Bernadino Mountains, largely unpopulated until the 1930s when Palm Springs became a hot spot for Hollywood celebrities. At first glance an ordinary landscape, this remarkable wood engraving with its masterful use of stippling and crosshatching features a train and its long trail of smoke.
