This woodcut is all about celebration. “Le Bal Bullier”, 1898 by Jean-Emile Laboureur depicts graduation festivities for French students of medicine who became interns after successfully passing their written exams. A bold, black impression, without the streak characteristic of impressions printed later in the edition. This depiction of university students at the Bullier Ballroom is arguably Laboureur’s most outstanding early print.
