Spruance utilised the same composition in this painting for a lithograph of the same title, Late Departure.  It depicts the now-demolished Sedgwick train station, built in 1882 at 253 East Mount Pleasant Avenue, Philadelphia. Spruance adopted his distinctive, vibrant palette to create exaggerated and simplified rhythmic forms.  Spruance paintings from his most significant period, the 1930s, rarely appear on the market. This outstanding gouache painting is in fine condition.
