Spruance utilized the same composition for his lithograph and painting of the same title. A lone seated man reads the bulldog edition, which is the earliest edition of the morning newspaper usually appearing the evening before. The sweeping curves and vivid colors add a dynamic energy, and lights in the subway tunnel hint at an oncoming train. Spruance paintings from his most important period of the 1930s almost never appear on the market. This outstanding gouache painting is in fine condition.
