Jan Matulka was an early proponent of modernism in America, bringing European avant-garde influencesespecially Cubisminto his work. His subjects included still lifes and figures, but it is his rare lithographs of New York City that are the most accomplished and capture the energy and architectural dynamism of the era. He moved to New York from Czechoslovakia in the early 1900s and was deeply influenced by the city’s skyline, streets, and bridges. This lithograph, perhaps the only one to come on the market, depicts geometric cityscape, fragmented perspectives, and bold contrasts of light and shadow.

The previous owner of this print was the etcher, Ralph M. Pearson (1883-1958), one of the earliest printmakers in New Mexico. He settled in Taos about 1915, where it is likely his friendship with Jan Matulka began.
