The Orator, Madison Square, 1916
McCarron 13. Etching, sand ground, and roulette on laid paper. Edition of 19. Rare. Signed in pencil.
10 ⅞ x 12 ⅝ inches | 27.6 x 32.1 cm
Set at the southeast corner of 23rd Street and Madison Avenue in New York City, the image depicts a street speaker passionately addressing a crowd—perhaps a political or social agitator, a common sight in Manhattan at the time. Considering that the United States entered WWI in 1917, perhaps the orator on his soapbox was protesting the war.
One of only 19 impressions, The Orator is rarely found on the market.
