George Bellows’ rare lithograph In the Subway captures the dynamic energy of urban life in early 20th-century New York City. Bellows used contrasts of light and shadow to highlight the claustrophobic atmosphere of the subway, yet one can sense the palpable joy of the loving couple. They may be working-class commuters, reflecting the social realism that defined much of Bellows’ work.
