Federal Art Project commission
The Federal Art Project (FAP) was part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal program initiated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935 to provide jobs during the Great Depression. The FAP aimed to support visual artists, promote public art, and make art accessible to all Americans, while also documenting the nation’s culture and history.
The Federal Art Project’s emphasis on printmaking democratized art by producing works that were both affordable and widely distributed, leaving a lasting impact on American visual culture.
