MATULKA, Jan
Jan Matulka (1890–1972) was a Czech-American artist and printmaker known for his diverse and experimental approach to modern art. Trained at the National Academy of Design in New York, he embraced a wide range of styles, from Cubism and Abstract Expressionism to Social Realism. As a printmaker, Matulka produced dynamic etchings and lithographs that reflected his bold use of line, form, and abstraction. His work often depicted urban scenes, industrial landscapes, and avant-garde compositions, bridging European modernist influences with American themes. A mentor to many emerging artists, including those in the Abstract Expressionist movement, Matulka’s contributions to printmaking and modern art remain influential today.
