HERTEL, Susan
Susan Hertel (1930–1993) was an American painter celebrated for her luminous depictions of animals, landscapes, and domestic scenes. Working largely in Southern California and New Mexico, she combined a modernist clarity of form with a warm, intimate sensibility. Her paintings often feature horses, goats, and everyday interiors, rendered in soft, sunlit palettes that evoke both serenity and vitality. A longtime collaborator with Millard Sheets on public art projects, Hertel developed a distinct voice in her easel work—quiet yet resonant, blending the familiar with a timeless, almost poetic atmosphere.
