REED, Doel
Doel Reed was an American painter and printmaker renowned for his powerful interpretations of the landscape of the American Southwest. Although particularly celebrated as a master of aquatint, Reed also worked extensively in painting and drawing, frequently developing his compositions from direct observation of the rugged terrain surrounding Taos, New Mexico. His works are characterized by bold, sculptural forms, dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, and a distinctive sense of depth and atmosphere. Across both his paintings and works on paper, Reed transformed the Southwestern landscape into striking, highly personal compositions that earned him national recognition as an important twentieth-century American artist.
