CALAPAI, Letterio
Letterio Calapai (1902–1993) was an American printmaker and painter known for his innovative contributions to modern printmaking. Born in Boston, he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts before further honing his skills in New York. Initially focused on painting, Calapai shifted his attention to printmaking in the 1940s, embracing techniques such as wood engraving, etching, and lithography. His work often explored social themes, historical events, and abstract compositions, reflecting his deep engagement with both artistic tradition and contemporary issues. As an educator, he played a crucial role in advancing printmaking techniques, teaching at institutions such as the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and the Pratt Institute. His legacy endures through his dynamic prints, which are held in major collections across the United States.
