LUM, Bertha
Bertha Lum (1869–1954) was an American artist and printmaker renowned for her pioneering role in introducing Japanese woodblock print techniques to Western audiences. Fascinated by Asian art, Lum studied traditional Japanese woodblock printing during her travels to Japan and became known for her delicate, mystical prints depicting landscapes, folklore, and mythological scenes. Her work was celebrated for its fine line work, ethereal quality, and use of color. Lum’s prints played a crucial role in popularizing Japonism in the West, and she remains an important figure in the cross-cultural exchange between Eastern and Western art.
