MATHEWS, Arthur Frank
Arthur F. Mathews (1860–1945) was a leading figure in the California Arts and Crafts movement, known for his luminous decorative paintings that blend classical symbolism with the landscapes and atmosphere of the West Coast. After studying in Paris and teaching at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco, he developed a distinctive style characterized by simplified forms, rhythmic composition, and a harmonious palette. Working from his Berkeley studio and often in collaboration with his wife, Lucia Kleinhans Mathews, he helped shape the visual identity of early 20th-century California art through painting, murals, and design.
