In the Spring, 1939

Czestochowski 13. Lithograph on wove paper, full margins.
Edition of 250 published by the Associated American Artists, New York.
Signed in pencil.
9 x 12 in.; 22.86 x 30.48 cm.

Bruce Johnson’s new catalogue raisonne: “In the Spring is the only lithograph in which Grant Wood poses a solitary subject gazing this intently at the viewer. He purposely obscures any identifying details in the man’s face using both dark shadows and brilliant white sunlight. As a result, the lithograph transcends from being a portrait of one individual to a symbol of all farmers and their relationship to their land.”
