Plans for the Future1939

Undescribed in Fine & Looney. Lithograph on BFK Rives paper, full margins.  From a proposed edition of 30.
Inscribed with the artist’s name and title, initialed by the artist’s wife, inscribed “Ed. 30” in pencil and with the red estate stamp.
9 7/8 x 14 3/8 in.; 25.1 x 36.5 cm.

This lithograph is related to Fine & Looney 162, which bears the same title.  The composition is in reverse and many details are changed, and it may be a unique impression pulled before the artist completed the other version, perhaps because of a damaged stone.  It has never appeared on the market, to our knowledge.  Plans for the Future depicts two architects absorbed in drawing.  It reflects not only Spruance’s fascination with figures engaged in everyday activities of work and play, but also his civic minded concerns.
