This dramatic woodcut was inspired by Heckel’s summer at a Baltic Sea resort near the Danish border, and by the principles of Cubism. He experimented with a prismatic fracture of light and space through triangular planes. Like the German painter Friedrich, it suggests a pantheistic experience in nature.
