Copley and his wife, Ethel Gabain, an official war artist, drove around Britain and Pontoon Welding is a scene based on a factory visit.

An impression was exhibited as ‘Pontoon Welders’, no. 137, and priced at 3 guineas in the 1947 Edinburgh exhibition of the Society of Artist Print-Makers.  The British Museum
