This etching is the same subject as Cadmus’ famous subject in oil painting. In 1934, Cadmus painted The Fleet’s In while working for the WPA. This painting, featuring carousing sailors, women, and a homosexual couple, was the subject of a public scandal and was removed from exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery.
