Portrait of a Woman, 1923

Cary Hauser was a Swedish-born artist known for his work as a printmaker, painter, and illustrator. His printmaking was heavily influenced by the Expressionist movement, particularly the German group, Die Brucke, who used distortion and abstraction to express emotional and social themes.  Hauser often used his prints to comment on social issues, including the struggles of the working class, urban poverty, and the emotional toll of modern life. Many of his prints feature human figures or faces, whose somewhat distorted forms emphasize psychological or emotional states, such as fear, despair, or inner conflict.  This portrait is probably his wife, which accompanies his self portrait lithograph (also included).
