COOK, Howard
American (1901-1980)
Times Square Sector, 1930
Duffy 146. Etching on wove paper, full margins. First trial proof before 35 impressions in the second state. Very rare. Signed, dated, and inscribed “1st trial proof / 1st state” in pencil.
11 ¹⁵⁄₁₆ x 9 ⅞ inches | 30.3 x 25.1 cm.
A brilliant impression in fine condition. This is apparently the only trial proof of Times Square Sector, considered the artist’s finest print. In the final state, Cook added more shading in the lower right and made extensive additions in the upper quadrant. A turreted building in the upper right and four skyscrapers in the upper left appeared, and other structures only suggested in the trial proof were strengthened and defined. An angled trail of smoke and the word TIMES, identifying the location, were also added in the final state.
