| JEAN-EMILE LABOUREUR French (1877-1943).
Skyscraper en Construction, New York , 1910. Laboureur 93, first state of three. Etching and drypoint printed in a warm brown ink with plate tone, on laid paper watermarked Ch Wittmann.
One of two proofs in the first state (the total number of proofs in all three states was 7). Very rare. Signed and inscribed "premier état (no 2/2)".
Laboureur made the first of several visits to the United States in 1903, where he recorded his impressions of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York in woodcuts and etchings. He was particularly intrigued by the frenzied crowds and spectacular skyscrapers of New York City. Skyscraper en Construction, New York, a subject which Laboureur also rendered in two watercolors and a preparatory drawing, is an extremely rare print and his most charming New York subject. This impression is printed with considerable drypoint burr, and is carefully wiped to create highlights and a warm plate tone. Price $2500. |
